WordPress.com offers free blogs with optional paid upgrades, and a full set of features that make it a great blogging option.
One of the best features of WordPress is their great selection of over 60 site designs, or themes, to choose from. With a wide variety of styles, the professional designs give a blog a modern, polished look. Minor customization is available with paid accounts, allowing full editing of the CSS for design control.
WordPress offers simple but powerful ways to organize content, with their categories and tagging. Categories allow users to group similar content together, an easy way to set up pages of related blog entries. WordPress automatically creates an archive based on your categories. The tagging system allows you to add keywords to an article, creating better search results and driving traffic to your blog from within the WordPress community, if you choose.
WordPress offers a nice selection of tools for posting content, including spell-check, photo uploading, video posting (from sites such as YouTube), and a preview to make sure everything is OK to go live. There is even an auto-save feature, which is great to have when generating content online in case of a browser or computer crash. If you already have content on another site, there is an import option that will bring in posts from places such as Blogger and LiveJournal. You can even show content from other sites, such as Filckr photos, with the sidebar widgets.
Another great feature of WordPress is “pages.” Pages allow you to create static sections of a website, separate from blog posts, giving the option of creating a full website with your account. This is a great option for creating “about” or “contact” pages, and for going beyond the idea of a simple blog website.
