100 Years of New York License Plates

I think one of the greatest things about graphic design is that it touches so many things. Typically, people think of things like posters, business cards, websites, logos and product packaging when it comes to design. However, graphic design is far-reaching, and license plates are no exception. According to New York Magazine, New York was the first state in the union to require plates, and they were first state-issued 100 years ago. Classic editions include the 1939 World's Fair "advertisement" and the introduction of the "Empire State" nickname in 1955. What's your favorite plate? Check out the article and the gallery on the NY Mag website.

One of the awesome things about collecting old license plates is how each plate is connected to a time, date, month, era and historical part of this country. 100 years of driving cars and we have 100 years of collectors items to show for it.
