MTV's New Logo: No More Music Television

The MTV logo is not only one of the most recognizable designs in our culture, but also one of the most flexible. Whether rendered in the classic yellow and red, pinstriped or leopard print, the logo is always identifiable. This has given the TV giant the ability to keep their brand while using the 3-D "M" with the spray painted "TV" in countless ways. The story of this famous logo project from almost 30 years ago can be read on Frank Olinsky's website, one of the original designers.

For these reasons, I was surprised to first hear that MTV had redesigned the logo, until I saw they basically just cropped out the bottom text "Music Television." This change makes perfect sense, being that MTV isn't what it used to be. It's now the place for reality TV and "Cribs," not 24/7 music videos. Despite the change, the logo will still be just as flexible, able to accommodate unlimited graphics and photos as seen on this blog. What do you think of the change?

I like this new concept. To me it’s not really a new logo, so much as a revamp or re-work. But even so, I think taking out the tag-line is a good thing. MTV is about trends and youth, and reality tv. Personally I don’t think MUSIC so much anymore when I hear MTV, I get my fill of music online (iTunes, lala.com, beatport.com).

This change will solidify the new image in people that MTV is now going for. I like the variety and possibilities that this logo will have, and it will still be identifiable.

MTV should go one further and go back to music, which made them boom in the 1980′s.

Music Television revived the sagging music business in the wake of the video game explosion by putting emphasis on clips, which were later called videos. It was THE standard of a generation, until wrestling became more important than music itself.

When they canceled Headbanger’s Ball, I was done with MTV. Reality TV should be left to Discovery and History.

Some logos shouldn’t be toyed with at all (e.g., UPS), but this one doesn’t look any different than the classic logo.

Well, this is how I look at it now. I basically went all through my teen years and early 20′s watching MTV. MTV dominated the 80′s culture and gave music and music sales a shot in the arm. But these days MTV has changed. It is no longer about the music. Its all reality crap. Its sad to me, but the world has changed. MTV ran its course back in the 80′s, and it will never ever be that same MTV we all loved back then. So, with saying all of this, YES, the new logo fits the MTV of today. Do I agree with the direction MTV has gone, no, but like I said, its not the MTV of the 80′s, and early 90′s anymore. MTV has moved on. My generation(X) has moved on, and must understand(me included) thats is a different world now, and deal with it as such. Yes, I do miss the MTV MUSIC TELEVISION days, always will. R.I.P MTV MUSIC TELEVISION.
