37signals makes great products that help us stay organized, from tracking tasks to managing contacts to online chatting. Mac AppStorm put together an impressive list of Mac and iPhone apps that compliment these products. The list includes software for Basecamp, Backpack, Highrise and Campfire. Since these 37signals services operate online in a web browser, these alternatives allow you to work offline and on-the-go.

Hi Eric:
Interesting article about some services that may have a lot of potential, however, I am concerned about this move to net-based software and data storage.
1. What if I can’t access the net, for whatever reason? Three times this year a ‘neighbor’ was caught not only riding my wireless service lines, but actually cut off the connection, bringing all email and web stuff to a standstill for at least 72 hours. If I was following a lot of these providers’ business plans, i.e. use their web based solutions over anything on my desktop or iPod touch, my biz would be sunk.
2. A little over 25 years ago, the PC was invented just so the ‘little guy’, (that is you and me) have power over the machines rather than the big guys. Power to the people, in other words. These services seem to reverse that trend, and I’m not entirely comfortable with that.
3. MS Office 2010 is supposed to be pretty much web based, with mini apps on your desktop or notebook. Again, all the power back to the big guns. So what’s to keep MS in 2014 to suddenly say, “Hey, the price of office just went up $100. Also, the monthly fee is going up too, $75/month to participate and use the products.” Ugghhh, no thanks. And MS says, no problem, just pay the initial upgrade cost and one month’s sub. fee and you can get your data back.” Think that won’t happen? HA. Already has.
For me, the best solution is a hybrid: the data is on either my desktop, or my iPod Touch, and I only have to enter it once, either via email, or a Bento DB, or the Cal app. Then it can sync up and I don’t worry about it. Because wherever it may be, it’s not on some server farm just waiting to get lost or stolen.
