Hand-Lettered Signs

Friday June 12, 2009
I love hand-painted signs and really any type done freehand... and wanted to share this gallery of vintage signs from the 40's and 50's that I spotted in a hotel in upstate New York. There's some great work here, long before the days of easily modified vector type.

Before I checked out the signs I wasn’t a vintage fan. Now, I’ve had a change of mind, at least for vintage hand-painted signs. You can feel the talent of the designer through his/her fluid strokes.

I’m sure the feeling is even stronger when viewed live.

Love to see it, I initially trained as a sign painter using the mahl stick and lettering enamels, the computer age stole a great many talented sign people but also created a whole new medium for advertising, I miss my sign painting days tremendously.
