New York, New York

Friday January 16, 2009

Both New York baseball teams will be starting the 2009 season in new stadiums, each each has created a uniform patch to celebrate the historic sports moves. The Yankees patch says it all, clearly spelling out what's happening ("Yankee Stadium Inaugural Season") and the classic image of the Yankee Stadium facade. The Mets patch, however, might leave some bewildered and even a non-sports fan thinking it's the team's first season in the sport. According to the Daily News, fans said "The Yankees hit it over the fence and the Mets struck out." Yahoo! Sports takes it a bit further calling the logo a laughingstock and a "pizza patch" (as in Domino's Pizza). I'm pretty sure we have more design fans here than sports fans... so what's your take on it?

I would definitely have to agree with you Eric. The Yankees’ patch makes mention of the word “Stadium” which leads one to think that it is only the stadium that’s renovated / changed. The Mets’ logo makes no mention of the word “Stadium” and gives the impression that 2009 is the team’s first season in existence. A lot of time and thought went into the Yankees’ patch it seems, which reflects their rich history. As far as the Mets… they striked out on this one! There is nothing nice about that patch.

Ok, the Yankees’ patch was very well thought out. Great attention to detail and very professional! The Mets’ patch leaves nothing to the imagination. Honestly, I think a pizza patch would be much more interesting, at least, you would be able to tell what is is. The Mets’ patch doesn’t include the team’s name or anything related to the Mets except their team colors.

I don’t know a lot about sports but I can usually tell what type of “thing” is being advertised by what is shown. Your right, I’m ready to go buy a pizza, I’m hungry now! Maybe a hotdog would have worked better. At least I associate a hotdog with a stadium. either that or I am forced to think that they were on a budget, or they want me to vote. hmmm. I thought we had a president already.

Eric, I would have to say in all honesty that everything about design is relative. In this context, it would be impossible to know whether or not the patch was effective without seeing the surroundings of the element, i.e. the uniform or even the stadium at large with matching signage, etc. Singularly though I agree, the yankees patch is elegant & well thought out & and the mets logo appears lazy & underachieved.

As usual the Mets show why they are #2 in this town. At least have the word ‘Mets’ somewhere on the patch.

I haven’t seen anything this bad since the new Duane Reade logo.
