New Duane Reade Logo
Saturday January 10, 2009
According to the NY Times and Racked, New York pharmacy giant (there's just about one on every corner) Duane Reade has slowly been releasing a new logo, and many think it's a big step backwards. Some say that it screams "Radio Shack," and others that say it's a messy mix of serif and sans serif type. What do you think?

i can’t get over the fact that it looks like it’s crooked.
Its so wrong in so many ways —the shape, the fonts. Besides looking like an idea that hasn’t been thought or worked through. But hey at least its bad enough to be remembered.
Its all a bit wishy washy nothing exciting- there is nothiing clever and as it doesn’t say pharmacy or clinical. To close to RADIO SHACK-the public will pick that up. More thiking… tick tick..
I almost fell off my chair when I saw that. That is the ugliest logo I have evr seen…and why is the R uppercase in the logo & lowercase in the text below. Horrible!
I’ve always loved typography, and know alot about different typography, layout, and logos. This logo is such a copycat with Radio Shack. What’s worst is that you can’t even read the last name on the bottom; too thin! Basically, this logo must be in the garbage!
Even Radio Shack’s logo look a lot better than this! How sad!
The copyright symbol is lost. I dont think anyone is seeing it. I think the D connecting to the circle is the problem. Re-stylizing the D and the circle will help this out. I have mixed feelings about the R being cap in the design, and lower case in the word.
wow…. is it a circle or a 1 sided circular square? the way the D forms a straight side on the circle is just visually painful.
I just saw radio shack’s logo with a D next to it.
Too many concepts, none of them good. Every relationship is an attempt at something that has been done, successfully, elsewhere. Did a board member’s nephew get this job?
Doesnt work that good with the two different fonts Sorry maybe if the d was thinner and a different r would work so its not like Radioshacks
What is that, a reigstered trademark symbol with a D steaking up behind it? What gives?
Horrible. Totally forgettable “design” that is lost before you even take your eyes off of it!
I am constantly amazed by the misappropriation of funds by medium to large sized businesses to develop (if you can call it that) a branding presence that almost guarantees them less business. It seems that the team who put this logo together was either short-sighted in their project analysis or that their hands were tied from the top down.
Tragically, this logo does appear to be on the cutting edge of your local high school arts class, but drastically behind the industry standards of corporate branding.
It looks like a 6th grade project. Not well thought out at all.
Beauty is in the eye…
Not appealing at all. I can see the Radio Shack resemblance and its definitely a step backwards! It looks like it was thrown together.
I was going to leave a comment, but most of it has already been said. HOWEVER, I will sayt I am surprised at the number of typos and grammatical errors in the comments…
I caught the obvious DR short for Doctor which from a marketing standpoint may be great for a pharmacy! Yes, it’s ugly but maybe that stands out and gets people talking. For the untrained eye it may look displeasing and therefore stick in their mind.
you know, about creating logo all you guys talked here like it need to be follow many kinds of “rules”. COME ON… beauty is in eye of beholder! in the ART, there is no good or bad. ugly art work can be beauty in someone eles eyes or after some time it become beauty in all your eyes ( like starry night ). any way, all i am saying is that as long it can please your eye somehow or given a “wow”, it’s still a art. about this logo, i believe if the R changed to lower-case, and smaller size and of cause do little magic on it too. it will much please to my eyes “at least”…
i concur. not thought out.
Still trying to decide if I need to turn my head of tilt my computer screen while looking at it. If you hadn’t blogged about it I would have never taken a second look at it. It looks like someone who didn’t know a thing about Desktop publishing or Design played with Paint one day and decided to make a logo. Maybe it grew on them? I have seen a lot of that but usually in smaller companies who can’t afford a graphic artist.
Their original logo looked like a sports clothing logo. This one is sooo lame. They should hold a contest among designers students–just like it was done for the Georgia Aquarium.
I just want to know how much they paid for that. I seriously need to go up on my prices. Even my WORST logo is better than that (which MUST be someone’s best)!
I wonder if they hired the designer from Craigslist for a mere $300. That would make sense because it’s not a professional job to say the least.
Horrible!
No, no, no, no, no!
I think 6th Graders would be insulted by Evan’s comment in regards to this logo. I’m sure even they could come up with something more balanced, uniform, modernized, etc…. Even if the kids got one of these areas right, it would still blow the doors of this design.
I know we are going through hard times in the economy but please…..Give me ten minutes working with this logo, and as times are tough I will accept half the amount of money they paid to get this done.
great fantastic perfict love it it’s the best ever
Looks like something a photoshop/illustrator newbie would whip up. I hope they scrap this design.
STOP, you’re hurting my feelings, I’m the designer…
Just kidding. It really does blow. I hope they don’t make it red white and blue like their old brand palette… that will take it to a whole new level of visual catastrophe.
A design like that in my book would have kept me out of Design School… Never gotten me a job and finally… it would have gotten me fired as a design firm. That brand manager needs to be fired in my opinion.
It looks positively ridiculous, including colors
I suppose one could say that at least it succeeds in being reproducible in black and white and in small scale. So they have that going for them!
A trainwreck.
Stinks!! Really.
ugh!
It’s ugly. They should ask for their money back. Who designed it?
As a New Yorker, I have to ask, why change it? Doesn’t everyone in this city know duane reade as is, especially considering that they are up there with starbucks for being absolutely EVERYWHERE!
As a graphic designer, I must argue the need for change because it keeps us in work! And, of course, that this is a terrible application of such a change, not edited enough, and really just not acceptable.
I’d also love to know…who is the so-called “talent” behind this monstrosity??
Makes me feel a little seasick.
It could look better with color and a lighter background
its better than the old logo..that was an eyesore
this one is dull, but i’d much rather have this plastered across the city than that much dated previous one
Strange font combination for the ‘DR’. Would look much better without the circle around the ‘DR’.
It’s crooked and in black and white. It’s not defining, nor does it stand out. If I’m running around NYC looking for the nearest DR, I’ll miss it because it is so plain (as I almost did today).
