Helvetica and the NYC Subway
Monday December 1, 2008
While Helvetica is the typeface of choice for the New York subway system today, it wasn't always, despite popular belief. A nine-page article from AIGA talks about the history of NY transportation, the signage system introduced by Unimark International for the MTA, and transportation signs in general. There are some great photos mixed into the story, as it traces the history of type and the New York underground.

I personally believe that Helvetica must be the most timeless type face in the history of typography, I would carefully dare to say that only Univers by Frutiger is close to Helvetica’s timelessness, but I have to ascertain this carefully, it might be slightly personal. You know what I would like to see in your Blog?

Anyway, thanks for bringing up Helvetica, most designer of my generation were trained to design true fonts, well before Fontographer was acredited.
