The Legal Side of Design

Sunday February 10, 2008

It would be nice if graphic designers could spend all their time, well, designing. Creating things is what we do best. However, we have to protect ourselves, and our work. This is where the legal side of graphic design comes in.

  • Attorneys - Let a lawyer worry about the 'legalese" so you don't have to.
  • Copyrights - You own the designs you create, and make sure it stays that way.
  • Contracts - Make a rule to always use one, and one day you'll be glad you did.

(1) Alec Lynch says:

One of the chief benefits of using a graphic design marketplace is that designers can focus on designing while the marketplace provides all your other functions (including handling of copyright / providing automatic watermarks for your work). As a result, you spend less time on: pitching to customers, search engine marketing or optimisation, setting up / processing transactions and dealing with copyright / legal issues.
